Qué es el Customer Journey

What is Customer Journey and how to apply it to your strategy?

If you want to truly connect with your customers, it’s not enough to have a good product or a beautiful website. You have to understand how they think, what they feel and what they need every step of the way until they decide to buy from you (and do it again).

That, in essence, is the customer journey.

But… What exactly is the customer journey and how can you use it to improve your sales and customer loyalty? In this article we are going to explain it clearly, without unnecessary technicalities, with real examples and with the practical approach that characterizes us at Doowebs, specialists in web development and digital strategy.

The Customer Journey: meaning and utility

The customer journey is the path a customer travels from the moment they discover a need until they finally make a purchase decision (and beyond). But it is not a straight path. It’s more like a roller coaster: there are moments of interest, of doubt, of comparison, of enthusiasm… and even of abandonment.

And therein lies the challenge: to understand each of these phases and know how to accompany the user in each of them.

We also call it customer journey mapping. It is a tool that allows us to visualize and analyze the whole process in a structured way, to know what to improve, what to reinforce and what to eliminate from our marketing or sales strategy.

Why is the customer journey so important?

Today users are in control. They compare, research, read reviews, look at social networks… 81% of consumers search for information online before making a purchase. If you are not in that process, if you are not an active part of that journey, you risk missing opportunities without realizing it.

Applying a good customer journey map allows you:

  • Better understand your customers (beyond demographic data).
  • Detect friction points in your web or sales strategy.
  • Generate useful and relevant content for each stage of the process.
  • Increase conversions and reduce abandonment.
  • Improve post-sales loyalty.

In short, it’s about aligning your business strategy with the real experience of your users. It’s not magic, it’s observation, analysis and empathy.

Phases of the Customer Journey

Although each model may vary slightly, in general the user journey is divided into five stages:

1. Awareness

The customer detects a need or a problem. He doesn’t know you yet, but he starts looking for solutions. Here your goal is visibility: content that solves doubts, SEO and SEM campaigns, presence in networks…

Example: A user searches Google for “how to create a website for my business”.

2. Consideration

He already knows you. Compare between different options, investigate further. In this phase it is vital to build trust: show success stories, testimonials, comparisons, downloadable resources…

Example: The user enters your website and sees that you have worked with companies similar to theirs.

3. Decision

They are about to buy. Here comes into play the design of your website, the clarity of your services, your calls to action. Everything must be clear, attractive and easy.

Example: The user finds a simple form to request a quote and submits it.

4. Retention

What about after you buy? Many companies forget this part, but keeping a customer is much more profitable than getting a new one. Take care of the after-sales, offer support, send useful content, exclusive promotions…

5. Advocacy

If everything went well, that customer can become your best ambassador. Ask for feedback, encourage them to share their experience, create referral programs. The voice of the customer is gold.

How to create your own Customer Journey Map?

Creating a customer journey map may seem complex, but with a clear approach and the right tools, it becomes a powerful tool for continuous improvement.

Step 1: Define your ideal customer

Before mapping their journey, you must know who you are targeting. Create one or more buyer personas: semi-fictional profiles of your ideal customers. Think about their goals, fears, challenges, digital habits…

Step 2: Identify contact points

Make a list of all the points where your customer interacts with your brand: from an Instagram post to a service call. Each point should make sense and be well taken care of.

Step 3: Map out the entire journey.

Relate those points to the stages we looked at earlier. Identify what the user feels, thinks and needs at each stage. Ask yourself: are there any leakage points and where might they lose interest?

Step 4: Spot opportunities for improvement

Having a global vision, you will see what aspects you can optimize: improve the mobile experience, simplify processes, create specific content, personalize messages…

Step 5: Implement and measure

Like everything in digital marketing, this does not end with the design of the map. It is key to measure, adjust and start again. The digital customer journey changes over time, as user habits change.
